Scholarship Guidelines

The IWCA Summer Institute is committed to recruiting and supporting writing center professionals who need financial assistance (i.e. lack of institutional support), overt mentoring and networking (i.e. outreach to underrepresented members of our community1), and pre-professional preparation (i.e. graduate students).

The Institute anticipates being able to offer 2-4 scholarships to help defray costs of attending.

Applications are due as an email attachment to Michele Eodice and Clyde Moneyhun (Michele Eodice michele@ou.edu or Clyde Moneyhun moneyhun@stanford.edu) by May 1, 2006.

Your e-mail should include the following:

  • Name:
  • Email address:
  • Mailing address:
  • Phone number:
  • Institution:
  • Position title:
  • Grad student/professional (indicate one)

Attach your CV or resume AND a letter that addresses the following questions:

  • What is your experience with writing centers? Describe your career trajectory as it relates to writing center work.
  • Describe a project or initiative that you might develop as a result of attending.
  • What might you contribute to your institution and/or the professional writing center community following the 2006 Summer Institute?
  • Provide a rationale for meeting one or more of the criteria described above (financial/mentoring/preparation).

A small team will review applications after May 1, 2006. Recipients can expect to have the Institute fee of $500 covered, but will still likely have to pay for travel and hotel themselves. (The number of scholarships awarded and the amounts of scholarships will be determined by the number of qualified recipients and the funds available when awards are made.)

1 We are modeling this particular criterion of the scholarship on the NCTE/CCCC Scholar for the Dream Travel Awards: "to encourage scholarship by historically underrepresented groups, including: African Americans, Asian Americans, Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and other Latino and Latina Americans, and American Indians-persons whose presence and whose contributions are central to the full realization of our professional goals."
