About the Institute

  • New to directing a writing center?
  • Starting up a new center?
  • Looking for new directions for your writing center?
  • Planning a writing center career?
  • Interested in learning and sharing with writing-center colleagues?
  • Ready for more sustained writing-center discussions than conferences offer?

In Summer 2006, join us at Stanford University for an intensive week of stimulating presentations, discussions, mentoring, and fun with writing center colleagues from around the world. The institute will provide a mentoring network of professional contacts, including both new directors and a range of veteran writing center professionals. The nine leaders are drawn from both large and small colleges and universities, community colleges, and secondary schools, with specialties that range from technology in the writing center to peer tutoring and writing across the curriculum. Collectively they represent 165 years of writing center experience.

The Institute, now in its fourth year, is sanctioned by the International Writing Centers Association and is supported by participant fees, grants from our friends in publishing, and contributions from the host group, the Stanford Writing Center and Stanford's Program in Writing and Rhetoric. Across the week there will be plenary sessions, panel presentations, round-table discussions, and workshops, as well as social events including a formal high tea in Stanford's Rodin Sculture Garden and an optional night out on the town in San Francisco. Registration is limited to 45 participants for a 1:5 leader to participant ratio, which allows time for small-group conversations and private consultations.
